1. Real diamonds occur naturally in nature whereas American Diamonds (also known as Cubic Zirconia) are the crystalline form of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) which are man-made in a lab.
2. Take a white sheet of paper. draw a line on it with a pencil. Keep the diamond inverted on the line. Look at the line through the centre of the diamond, you should not see a clear line if the gem is a diamond.
3. A real diamond should not have scratches on its surface. This will be the first check to test for a real diamond.
4. Real diamonds sell for thousands of dollars per carat whereas American Diamonds will just fetch a few dollars per carat.
5. Breathe on the stone. Real diamonds don't retain heat and so if you breathe on them, they should clear up almost instantly. American diamonds will stay cloudy for a longer period of time as they do retain heat.
6. Place the diamond on a newspaper. Real diamonds refract a lot of light, making it nearly impossible to read the letters through it. If you are able to read the letters on the newspaper through your diamond, then it is probably an American Diamond.
