12 Difference Between College And University

1. A college is a smaller institution that typically offers undergraduate degrees. Some colleges, such as community colleges and junior colleges, may offer only two-year degrees. Most colleges offer bachelor’s degrees, and some colleges also have associate degrees.
2. Generally, universities have a more diverse offering of classes and programs than a college because of the larger number of enrolled students.
3. A college is a postsecondary educational institution that provides instruction beyond the 12th grade level in programs that satisfy the requirements for a degree at the associate, baccalaureate or graduate level.
4. A university is awarded that title because it offers full undergraduate and graduate programs.
5. University typically has a school of arts and sciences and a school of engineering.
Colleges offer more limited options and often don’t offer master’s programs.
6. There are even community college and junior colleges that provide students with two-year degrees.
7. University  can have a medical or law school for those pursuing professional degrees in those fields.
8. If the student prefers a school with a wider choice of classes and programs, a university may be a better fit.
9. If the student prefers small sized classes and being able to interact more with their professors, a college might be a better option.
10. At university you'll often be given long periods of time to complete assignments, sometimes as much as 12 weeks.
11. Colleges tend to be more directly career-oriented than universities. This means they offer practical or hands-on training. Generally, a certificate program is 1 year or less, and a diploma program is 2 or 3 years.
12. Example:
Harvard College has a four-year program for students looking to get their bachelor’s degree with about 6,500 students. Harvard University encompasses Harvard College and ten other schools that offer both graduate and professional programs.
